With the off-season starting in the Overwatch League, moves are already being made. The inaugural season champion London Spitfire are releasing Ji-hyeok “birdring” Kim, Hee-dong “Guard” Lee, and Jong-seok “NUS” Kim, along with coach Jeong-min “Jfeel” Kim. from their roster. All these members were key to specific moments of victory in both season one and two. Yet these releases seem to indicate London wants season three to be more consistent.
London Spitfire needed a change
The London Spitfire won the first Overwatch season, much to the surprise of everyone, but lost relatively early in the second season playoffs. Inconsistency and incapability to beat the top-tier teams were their major issues. They would easily defeat lower-tier teams like the Defiant and Fuel and then lose to middle-tier teams like the Mayhem and Reign.
After making it into the play-ins, they won a close 4-3 series against the Shanghai Dragons. Unfortunately that was their last win, losing to the New York Excelsior 4-1 after. After having a tumultuous inaugural season and still winning the championship, not reaching the finals clearly hit them hard. So when this exodus of players and a coach was announced on Twitter, it was expected yet still inherently a little surprising.

How will this affect London?
It won’t affect much in the long run, to be blunt. At season’s end, all three of these players weren’t starting anyway. Birdring, while starting caliber, didn’t have a great year at all in comparison to the inaugural season he had. His inconsistency was an issue then and even more so now. Guard, the backup DPS player, was brought in last off-season to shore up the Sombra role but didn’t have an impact at all in the London Spitfire’s season. And Nus, while one of the players that led to their inaugural championship, was benched by new support Ji-hoon “Quatermain” Song as soon as he arrived.
It can’t be said precisely why coach Jfeel was released, but he seems to be a simple casualty of needed change.
However, I can see this leading to a massive signing for the London Spitfire, as they have only one DPS player currently on their roster. They need to sign a new starting DPS player to play alongside former playoff MVP and All-Star Joon-yeong “Profit” Park. Rumors are swirling around as to whom that might be, from Byung-sun “Fleta” Kim to Jae-hyeok “Carpe” Lee. If they get a star to truly match Profit’s flexibility or skill, the London Spitfire could be a team to fear in season three.

Magic: The Gathering announces crossover set with My Little Pony
No, you didn’t read that headline wrong. The well-known (and somewhat infamous) My Little Pony will be crossing over with Magic: The Gathering. A brand new box set will be released on HasbroPulse.com featuring three unique and exclusive cards. Each features art of characters from the show. Specifically, these characters are Rarity, Nightmare Moon (which can flip to Princess Luna), and Princess Twilight Sparkle.
A Strange Crossover
Hasbro asked MTG designers to create the set in honor of My Little Pony entering its final season. Crossovers with Hasbro products are nothing new. In the past, special promotional cards for D&D, Nerf, and Transformers have all been created.
These cards are silver-bordered and are therefore not legal in organized play of MTG. They all feature unique abilities and flavor text that harkens back to the show, My Little Pony. In addition, each card bears a unique set symbol, watermark, and foil stamp not found anywhere else in Magic. The cards will be fully foiled (including both sides of the Nightmare Moon/Princess Luna). It should be noted that Princess Twilight Sparkle mentions 4 other unprinted cards. There is no word on whether these cards will be printed or not, but it is likely they could show up in a follow-up box set.
Sales of the set will be given to charity, specifically to Extra Life. The charity raises money for Children’s Network hospitals. If you’re interested in picking up this exclusive (and unique) set, it will be available on HasbroPulse.com from Oct 22 to Nov 5 (or sooner, if sold out). The set will cost $50 and is only available to those with a United States or Canadian address.
In addition to the box set, an exclusive playmat will also be sold. It will cost $100 and features the art of the cards above, as well as the caption “Ponies: The Galloping”. Matching digital Arena sleeves will also be available. The sleeve sets will each cost $3.99 and will be around for a shorter time (Oct 28 through Nov 4).
Should you buy this set?
Short answer: no. Unless you are a fan of the show or want to help with the charity, it isn’t worth the high price tag. The cards aren’t usable outside of extremely casual play and are more for display or as a conversation piece. They will most likely retain their value though, so if you want to invest or try to resell the set for profit, that is a very valid option. Fans of the show will find the set to be a loving tribute to some of the fan-favorite characters.
