App Defense Alliance
App Defense Alliance is a network that will work on fighting harmful and malicious Android apps that have become a threat as Android has grown in popularity. The collaboration will help improve the efficiency of Google's Play Protect tool which periodically scans all apps on the Play Store as well as the ones installed on all Android devices worldwide.
How "App Defense Alliance" Works?
Google Is Forming An 'App Defense Alliance' To Keep You Safe From Malware-Ridden Apps for the first time, the search giant, Google has sought help from third-party companies to make Android more secure.
- This network will generate a new app risk intelligence as apps are being queued to publish.
- Third-Party partners will analyze that dataset and act as another, vital set of eyes prior to an app going live on the "Play Store".
- If the Android App will be analyzed by the researchers and then the app will publish on the "Android Play Store".
Do note that all the partners will only be able to scan the apps submitted to the Play Store and not the ones installed from external sources. Google says that it has decided on the partners based on their "success in finding potential threats and their dedication to improving the ecosystem."
Last month, Lukas Stefanko, an ESET security researcher, compiled a list of 172 apps on Google Play with upwards of 335 million installs that were found to engage in ad fraud, credit card phishing, and serve other kinds of malware. And this was just for September.
